Mahasiswa Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), sukses memodifikasi sepeda motor sehingga bisa memakai bahan bakar air.

Sepeda motor tersebut, merupakan hasil kreasi mahasiswa Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA).

"Ini menjawab tuntutan masyarakat, khususnya karena harga BBM naik," ujar Dr Tulus Ikhsan Nst, dosen pembimbing, Rabu (19/11/2014).

Ia menuturkan, sepeda motor standar bisa dimodifikasi sehingga berbahan bakar bioetanol plus air.

Sebanyak 500 mililiter air tampak diletakkan tepat di jok belakang, berdampingan dengan bioetanol di dalam sebuah tempat transparan. Hebatnya, air tersebutlah yang digunakan untuk menjadi bahan bakar menembus 300 kilometer perjalanan.

Beberapa waktu lalu, Tim peneliti yang tergabung dalamPerhimpunan Ahli Teknik Indonesia (PATI) Wilayah Provinsi Banten berhasil menciptakan mesin perahu berbahan bakar air yang bisa mengurangi ongkos melaut para nelayan. "Mesin tersebut dapat mengurangi pemakaian bensin para nelayan hingga mencapai delapan puluh persen," kata Ketua Umum PATI Wilayah Provinsi Banten, Lili Romli, di kantornya di Graha Telkom Serpong, Rabu (28/3/2012). Ia mengatakan, mesin tersebut dinamai Eco Power Buster (EPB) yang dibuat oleh peneliti muda, Ajat Sudrajat dari Universitas Nasional. Bila biasanya para nelayan mengeluarkan uang sebesar Rp 600 ribu per hari untuk kebutuhan membeli bahan bakar minyak, maka dengan mesin EPB pengeluaran bisa ditekan. Proses menghidupkan mesin tetap memerlukan bahan bakar minyak.

Namun dalam proses bekerjanya, mesin berkapasitas bahan bakar 2 liter itu bisa dihidupkan hanya dengan air. Mesin itu, menurut Lili, berharga sekitar Rp 1,8 juta. PATI sudah berkoordinasi dengan Bappeda Propinsi Banten untuk mengembangkan mesin tersebut. Kemampuan mesin hemat energi ini sudah melewati pengujian oleh BP Migas Kementerian ESDM dan uji laboratorium IPB. "Kita masih menunggu respon dari Bappeda Provinsi Banten terkait pengadaan mesin tersebut untuk para nelayan," katanya. Lili juga menambahkan bahwa pihaknya siap untuk mengadakan 100 mesin tahap pertama bila pemerintah ingin mendukungnya. "Para nelayan di Jawa Timur sangat antusias dengan adanya mesin ini. Kami harapkan Pemprov Banten pun ikut mengembangkannya," pungkasnya.
